If you like the sound of a big, powerful American amplifier, the 100 watt VT-22 / V4 is right up there with the best.

This is the coveted early '70s vintage version, before the introduction of Master Volume and the white rocker switches. It has been fully renovated and serviced, with a quad of new 6L6s. This amp has been converted to use the much more commonly available 6L6 from the original 7027A, which is exactly the same valve (despite myths to the contrary) with a different pinout.

The amp is like a super high-quality Fender Twin Reverb, but with build quality that puts the other to shame! These are not light - the VT-22 is a V4 in 2x12 combo form, and weighed in at about 40 kilos (90 pounds)! This one has been cut down (very well) to be a head only (so is effectively a V4), and now weighs a 'mere' 27 kilos (or 60.6 pounds)! This shows just how massively built these amps are, with transformers and chassis construction that have to be seen (and lifted) to be believed.

The amps also sound superb, which is why they were the choice of the Rolling Stones at the time (Exile on Main Street) as well as Steely Dan.

If you're looking for a high-power amp to use with your quad, with loads of American tone and streed cred, this amp will be hard to beat. If you are a feel player with a sense of dynamics, this amp will really satisfy you, and also if you like an amp that interfaces well with pedals. While the age of the amp dictates that it won't have an effects loop, the sheer headroom and clarity of the amp means that a high-quality stomp box connected just in front of it will prove a very rewarding experience! In fact, even if you're looking for a good bass amp head, this will do the job, with its high power and generous headroom - just keep the reverb control down!
