Some time back I came across what was then the oldest Goldentone valve amp I had seen. It was the same model as this one, and was claimed to be a 1959 model by its long-term owner at the time. That amp sold instantly after electronic restoration, and can be seen here.

However, this one is even older! The serial number is lower (1093, where the previous one was 2744), the handle is leather rather than plastic, and it does not have the Goldentone and RM badges. At first I thought the badges had fallen off over the years, but careful inspection shows they were never fitted, so the amp is no doubt an extremely early Goldentone, manufactured before the badges were designed or manufactured.

This amp has had extensive restoration work done to the electronics by a leading Melbourne amp tech, and has a new pair of Electro Harmonix EL34s fitted.

This vintage Goldentone still has its original Rola 12PX Alnico speakers, and they sound fantastic, being surprisingly efficient and toneful. This is a very lively, very giggable amp, as well as being a serious collectible. The EL34 output pre-dates the later Goldentones which used the then commonly available 6DQ6 valves (which were found in TV sets of the time as the horizontal deflection amplifier!), and gives the amp much more 'usual' vintage amp tones.

These amps are remarkably light, weighing just 15kg, despite dimensions of 65cm(W) x 50cm(H) x 22cm(D).
